Ombre Bookmarks

Bookmark 1 I have combined several topics from our Make-n-Take night at Leadership with this project.  The design of these bookmarks was presented by Brandi Barnard.

Brandi showed us how to color the Whisper White piece by simply pressing a stamp pad to the cardstock.  She used one color on her bookmark, but since we were also talking about the ombre trend, I used three colors on my cardstock.  The colors shown are Pink Pirouette, Primrose Petals and Raspberry Ripple.  The four bookmarks on the left are done by simply pressing the pads to the Whisper White cardstock.

Since Brian Pilling also demonstrated watercolors at the session, I was inspired to try the same look on watercolor paper.  The four bookmarks on the right are my watercolored version.  I used drops of the same colors in a small palette and brushed the ink onto watercolor paper with my Aquapainter.  I think this is more fun, and I personally like the streaky watercolor look.

In both cases, I colored the cardstock first.  For the stamp pad version, I cut my bookmarks first, and colored each one individually.  In the watercolor version, I waterpainted a length of cardstock and then cut strips.

The bookmarks are just under 2″ wide for punching in the new Scallop Tag Topper punch.  It makes the scallop top and the slotted hole on any length piece – my bookmarks are 5 1/2″ long.  Brandi taught us to punch the large butterfly only partially, so that the wing tips stick up and the body is still connected to the page.  I did not always have good luck stopping my punch in time, so many of my butterflies flew away, but I just sewed them back in place!

In the picture below, the butterfly on the left was punched completely, and the one on the right was only partially punched.
